CASE STUDIES

We have shared a number of stories from employers as to why they have found working with a gateway so beneficial, as well as what it means to a young person to be part of the scheme.

Find out here why our CEO, Diana Sterck is so passionate to help support young people.

Our Chief Executive has been co-Chair of Merton’s Economic Wellbeing Group for a number of years. It brings together many of the organisations in the borough who are involved in skills, training and employment.

Representing local businesses at a regional level has always been a priority for us in our aim to make sure that Merton is represented and listened to.  In 2019 Diana Sterck was invited to sit on the newly formed South London Skills and Employment Board, a forum of large and smaller businesses, colleges and training providers and local authorities, working together to influence Government policy and to address key challenges for employers such as the apprenticeship levy and recruitment and skills gaps.

We want to represent the voice of small and medium sized employers and bring more financial support from Government into the area to help prepare people for work, and address up-skilling and productivity.

Our aim is to ensure that business needs are met when it comes to preparing people for work. We also want to match local people to local jobs, in our belief this is the best ingredient for a sustainable local economy.

There are plenty of opportunities for businesses to get involved – from offering mentoring to those seeking employment or wanting to start a business, to helping young people in schools prepare for the world of work.

TRAINEESHIPS 2021

Looking to recruit a young person? Official figures show, that younger people continue to bear the brunt of the jobs crisis.

We wanted to let members know about the new traineeship programmes that are starting in April 2021. Traineeships are a great opportunity for employers to get to know young people, up to the age of 24, who are looking for an insight into different vocational areas through a work placement.

Two local organisations are offering Traineeships.

Training and Recruitment Partnership - click here for more information.

London Learning Consortium - click here for details of their support.

When we launched our Take One initiative back in 2013, we were asking employers to help young people take up an apprenticeship or find a job. With your help over 100 young people went into apprenticeships.

Over the past 4 years we have widened Take One to also include adults as part of our partnership work with local work preparation organisations.

Merton Chamber launches a suite of online training to support employers in meeting their legal duties.

Despite many employees working from home or being furloughed the responsibility for employers to meet your legal obligations, is probably greater than ever!

We are pleased to provide a package of online training that can be done under furlough rules and some of which will support your staff in working safely from home.

All courses are certified.  Additional courses available upon request.

Two local organisations We wanted to let members know about the new traineeship programmes we are starting over the next few weeks.

Traineeships are a great opportunity for employers to get to know young people, up to the age of 24, who are looking for an insight into different vocational areas through a work placement.  Currently it could start as a virtual placement hopefully moving to an onsite experience as things progress. This sits alongside a range of training to get people ready for work, support with their basic skills and more detailed sessions to enhance their knowledge of the specific areas they are interested in. We want to tap into the wealth of knowledge from local businesses and hopefully get them to add a real insight into what their companies do and how they fit into the local area.

There are some  great incentives available for employers engaging with the programme at the moment; should you find someone who fits well with your business then they could move swiftly and easily into an apprenticeship. The incentives for companies taking on a new apprentice are even better from 1st April, it could be as much as £4000.

The support and guidance for the traineeship and potential future apprenticeship comes from us and we would be there to guide you every step of the way.
