24th November 2009

Most people would say that you have to go to central London and pay central London prices if you want to attend a good quality conference, and they would be right... – until now.

Merton Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce an event for business leaders bringing you expert speakers, renowned in their field, to a local venue.

Held in the delightful setting of Wimbledon Park Golf Club, we hope you will take this opportunity to listen to the experts and network with other local business leaders to support you in driving your business through recession to recovery.

OPENING SPEAKER - MORNING SESSION OPENING SPEAKER - AFTERNOON SESSION
Josephine Fairley
(co-founder of Green & Black's)
As well as being co-founder of the best known high quality chocolate brand, Jo Fairley is also author of over a dozen books and contributing editor to the Mail on Sunday YOU Magazine. When setting up Green & Black's, Jo and her entrepreneur husband set out to market the world's first organic chocolate. They decided on "green" to represent their environmental and social ethos, and "black" because the 70% cocoa chocolate was the darkest on the market at that point. Jo will share with you the determination needed and the risks involved in building a business and exploiting a niche market. She will demonstrate the power of branding, how business can be both ethical and highly successful, and why you should never underestimate the intelligence of the consumer.
Nick Hewer
(Sir Alan's right hand man on The Apprentice)
For all followers of The Apprentice, it wouldn't be the same without Nick Hewer's shrewd and insightful contributions. With a lifetime of business experience, Nick's background is in PR. His business was responsible for the media handling of all Sir (now Lord) Alan Sugar's businesses and charitable activities. His long and impressive client list also included the Secretariat of HH the Aga Khan. Nick will join us over lunch and kick off our afternoon session. We can guarantee that his account of his life in PR and experiences on The Apprentice will certainly not only be extremely entertaining but will also set the mood for the afternoon.
Jane Bromley
Chartered Marketer MCIM
Internationally renowned senior business consultant, Jane has advised Boards and senior management teams of some of the largest businesses in the world, including Hewlett Packard, Microsoft and Merck. With over 2 decades of experience working with business leaders, Jane's talk will be full of real life examples and the insights that have helped transform businesses. Drawing on her experience, she will challenge your thinking and inspire you to take swift and confident action to bring powerful momentum to your business direction.
Mike Smith
(Franchisee of the Year finalist)
As the most successful McDonalds' franchisee in 2009, Mike is a true entrepreneur and has come a long way since he acquired his first McDonalds restaurant in South London in 2000. The business was underperforming in all areas - from customer satisfaction to profitability - but that was a challenge Mike was eager to meet. Quick to use his business skills and local knowledge, he transformed the business and, two years later, was ready to work his magic on his second franchise. Taking over the Balham restaurant in 2002, he used his entrepreneurial skills to identify and tap into a lucrative late night market that has helped boost the business significantly. Since then Mike has continued to grow his portfolio and will share his experience of the rollercoaster ride of the last nine years.
Andrew Myall
Andrew has held senior and board level positions in blue chip and SME enterprises as well as starting several business ventures of his own including telecoms infrastructure, offshore hedge funds, jewellery importers and land and property. The breadth and diversity of his knowledge base has secured his reputation as an accomplished financier. Having developed over 100 business and financial plans with a view to raising capital in many different industry and market sectors, Andrew will outline how an innovative approach helps to secure debt and equity finance in these challenging economic times.
Christine Tebbutt
Chartered Fellow CIPD
Christine worked for multi-national companies and small businesses before setting up her own company, Catalyst (HR) Ltd. Combining her extensive experience in the practical application of employment law, with management, training and development, Christine's talk will illustrate the power of your people in making a difference to your business. She will address both the positives and negatives including team tactics and the financial consequence of not getting it right. Her strategies for success include the feelgood factor, reaping rewards, and how to nurture your employees to achieve positive PR.
