Merton Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 20th birthday this year.

Working with approximately 4000 businesses, with a reputation for being one of the most innovative and successful Chambers of Commerce in the country, and with 2012 also being Olympic year and the Queen’s Jubilee, we will be marking  the year with a number of special initiatives and events.

Wednesday 18 January at 8am
Join us for the first Networking Breakfast of the Year at Bar 191 in Raynes Park. Network, share your views and hear about the development plans for Raynes Park.

Thursday 19 January at 8am - South African Trade Event at Cannizaro House Hotel. With Britain gearing up for the 2012 Olympic Games and with the South African Olympic Team selecting South London as their pre games training camp, what are the opportunities for British Business in South Africa?  How can businesses exploit the links between these two great sporting nations?

Tuesday 24 January 8.30-10.00 - Mitcham Town Centre Forum at McDonald's. Business centred forums, focussing on the issues you are currently facing. Network over coffee, followed by a theatre-style forum.

Thursday 26 January 12-2pm - Lunch and Learn at The Generator Business Centre. The 'Lunch and Learn' peer group learning network is for local people who are running a business to interact, share information and learn from each other all within a friendly supportive environment.  Lunch is also included.

Wednesday 1 February 9.15-12.45hrs - Fire Warden Marshal Training
Required for those employees within the Workplace, who have a key role to play within the management of Fire Safety in the Workplace.

Tuesday 7 February 9.30-12.30hrs - What is Cloud? Discover how moving all your data to the cloud provides additional security, flexibility and improves time management for all your employees.  Learn how  you can make financial savings whilst reducing your IT vulnerabilities.

Wednesday 8 February 16:00-19:00 - Facebook Masterclass - This three hour training session is designed to help you understand the commercial opportunities of Facebook for business and the first steps needed to get to grips with it all.

Wednesday 29 February 9.30-16.30hrs - Emergency First Aid at Work
Basic life saving first aid and workplace health and safety regulations. An HSE approved course, ideal for smaller workplaces that present few health and safety risks.

Merton Chamber celebrates 20 years in business!

Merton Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 20th birthday this year, having worked with approximately 4000 businesses.

The Chamber of Commerce  works across South London and is led by Diana Sterck, supported by  a team of 15 people, leading on projects such as Merton Means Business, running  the Generator Business Centre, running Wimbledon town centre management and developing Love Wimbledon Business Improvement District to name a few.

As a Chartered Marketer Diana firmly believes success comes from strong market orientation and keeping your finger on the pulse. She said “Our success has been organic – we’ve grown year on year by diversifying our service range, expanding our customer base and, most importantly for the customer, offering a customer orientated service. We have a “can do” spirit, with everyone playing a critical part in our success.”
The birthday celebrations kick off with a South African trade event on 19th January and will be followed by special events and Olympic legacy projects.

The Wimbledon Way project goes ahead for 2012

The vision for The Wimbledon Way (a marked walking route from Wimbledon station to The All England Lawn Tennis Club) emerged through Merton Chamber of Commerce’s consultation with the business community and other stakeholders on how Wimbledon should not only celebrate our involvement in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, but to also maximise this window of opportunity.

With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund we are just launching a project for people to participate and learn about their heritage, involving young people, schools and community organisations taking forward  projects that “tell their story”. These projects will be linked to the physical walking route to attract tourists and visitors alike.

2011 - What a busy year it was!

Take a quick look at our summary for 2011 and what you can expect from us in 2012 as the Chamber goes from strength to strength:

  • Business start up support - business basics workshops; Lunch and Learn sessions; and HM Revenue & Customs workshops
  • Business support workshops - covering topics such as sales, marketing, finance, Social Media, Customer Care, PR, Creating a Website
  • Town Centre Forums grew in 2011 to include Wimbledon, Raynes Park, Mitcham, Morden and Colliers Wood
  • Sector forums proved to be a great success and started with Green Technologies and Creative Industries and will develop in 2012
  • Networking events - from the AGM and Christmas Lunch with over 70 guests at both events we also had our regular networking lunches as well as some new Networking events - Welcome to New Members evening drinks; A Christmas party; Networking evening in partnership with the Korean Chamber of Commerce
  • Olympic Breakfast - The Go South Go event at The All England Lawn Tennis Club with over 150 guests, where we met Wenlock and Mandeville.
  • Our helpline has assisted nearly 70 businesses and conducted nearly 50 advice sessions - a fantastic achievement for all those who have started their business during these challenging times and we are pleased to have helped them on their exciting journey!
  • Special guests at some of our events this year included Leader of the Council Stephen Alambritis, Stephen Hammond MP, Mayor of London Boris Johnson, Zac Goldsmith MP, Siobhan McDonagh MP, actor Sam Attwater, TV Presenter Anna Williamson, Mayor Cllr Gilli Lewis-Lavender, former Mayor Cllr Oongah Moulton and not forgetting the Olympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville....2011 has proven to be a very successful year!

The Ballot begins....9th Jan-9th Feb 2012

Love Wimbledon has been set up by Wimbledon businesses to promote and improve Wimbledon town centre, ensuring it fulfils its potential and capitalises on opportunities available. 
The ballot opens on the 9th January and results will be announced on the 10th February. Please remember to cast your vote. If all goes to plan Love Wimbledon will kick off its 5 year Business Plan from 1st April 2012.
