Merton Chamber starts 20th Birthday celebrations with South African Event

Business leaders in South London gathered last week to hear from some of the UK’s foremost experts on trading opportunities in South Africa. The South African Trade Event was organised by Go South Go and Merton Chamber of Commerce to help local business understand the cultural differences, business practices and opportunities in the South African market. With Wimbledon gearing up to host the 2012 Olympic tennis, guests were also privileged to have their photo taken with the Olympic torch, which was provided courtesy of Olympic sponsor Lloyds TSB Bank.

With key note speeches from businesses trading in South Africa, the South African High Commission, UKTI, The Head of Pre-Games Training camp at St Mary's University College, Twickenham and with a live link to the British Consul in Cape Town, the event gave businesses the chance to hear what it means to do business in South Africa. They were also provided a great opportunity to network with like minded business leaders and exhibitors.

Merton Chamber enjoys a celebrated start to the new year!

Diana Sterck, CEO of Merton Chamber of Commerce won the Contribution to Merton’s Community award.

Stephen Alambritis was thrilled to recognise those who have gone above and beyond their duties to provide an excellent service, “Each year the outstanding award never ceases to impress me, even in these financially challenging times when resources and budgets are tight, we have a wealth of people and talent who give their all to making Merton a better place to live and work.”
Ged Curran, Merton Council chief executive, believes that Diana is a worthy winner, "We were delighted to be able to recognise the work that Diana does, given the very important role Merton Chamber of Commerce plays in the borough. Diana's enthusiasm has brought the value of partnership working to the forefront and she is a very deserving winner.”

With Diana’s triumph at the awards and with Merton Chamber of Commerce celebrating our 20th birthday, there are only good things to come from the Chamber this year. We will celebrate our birthday with special events and Olympic legacy projects throughout the year so make sure you keep in touch and get involved.

Advertising & Trading Regulations during the Olympics

The Advertising and Trading Regulations bring in temporary restrictions to advertising and trading in open public places, within a few hundred metres around competition venues during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Although much ’business as usual‘ advertising, such as shop signs and in-store advertising will not be affected, to ensure the objectives of the regulations are met (or to prevent ambush marketing) other advertising in certain areas around the venues will only be permitted if authorised by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

The London 2012 website now includes information explaining the rules on advertising and outdoor trading near Olympic and Paralympic venues - Wimbledon is in an advertising zone. If you think you may be affected, please visit their website, which spells out the application process and criteria (for authorisation for trading and advertising), including a detailed guide and shows examples of practices that do not require authorisation, or can only be carried out if authorisation has been obtained.
